We relied on a fairly recent guidebook to get us to the dunes, which basically said go to Erfoud and follow
the signs, the road runs out after a bit but follow the telegraph poles... well the telegraph poles are long
gone as mobile phones have taken over (we had full signal sitting on top of the dunes!)
Basically you should now take the road south out of Erfoud and take the brand new road (below) to Merzouga. You will
still have to go off-road for the last half a mile to get to the village, but it's a lot easier and kinder
on your vehicle than the corrugated pistes.
I'm glad we went on the pistes though, it was an experience I
won't forget and seemed appropriate that we gave the Granda a taste of what she might have had to endure, had
we gone all the way to Dakar!
I'd never been so glad to get back on tarmac
